Bangkok Fashion City Project (BFC), has tremendously helped increase the value of Thailand's leather goods exports, which is expected to go up by 12 percent to reach US $1.12 billion this year.
The BFC project spanning two years, aims to promote Bangkok as the fashion capital of Asia. A good number of leather goods manufacturers have participated in the project; besides, producers have also taken efforts to improve their designs in order to suit the preferences of European and American markets.
In terms of the demand for Thailand leather, US, Hong Kong and Belgium have turned out to be the largest export markets for the country. The average export to these countries in the first half of the year was 20.5, 10.3 and 6.3 percent, respectively.
Furthermore, the Japan-Thailand Economic Partnership Agreement (JTEPA), which is yet to be approved, will encourage Japanese footwear producers to venture for markets in Thailand. However, government assistance is still required to help Thai leather manufacturers hold a dominant position in Japan.
In addition, local footwear producers are expected to refine and ameliorate the footwear quality and design so as to gain remunerative prices for the goods sold.
