At a recent event held at the Liberation War Museum in capital Dhaka, speakers discussed the government’s initiative to implement labour regulations through the creation of a comprehensive worker database, which aims to ensure no worker is left behind.

Labour Department director general Tarikul Alam emphasised that the government is committed to improving the lives of working-class people through these regulations even as deputy director Rokhsana Chowdhury highlighted the potential of the workers while encouraging the workers to contribute to advancing Bangladesh’s production sector.

Mahfuzur Rahman Bhuiyan, joint director general of the Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments, mentioned that the government is providing financial support to workers who returned to their villages due to the Covid-19 pandemic through grants administered by his department.

The event was organised by Karmojibi Nari (KN) and the Safety and Rights Society (SRS), in collaboration with GIZ, in which more than 500 garment and tannery workers (both male and female) participated under the slogan “Healthy Workers Beautifying Working Environment: Bangladesh Rich in Production.”

Speakers expressed hope that the event would inspire and encourage workers in the readymade garments industry, tannery industry, and other sectors, fostering a sense of community and support amongst the workforce.
