Apparel industry is one of the largest foreign exchange earners, accounting for nearly 16% of the country's total exports.

India is estimated to have approximately 30,000 readymade garment manufacturing units providing employment to around three million people.

It is the responsibility of a company to ensure that the products, services and the operations do not have any negative impact on the society.

Companies are expected to address and incorporate suitable actions relating to the public responsibility and impact areas, in their strategic planning and in process management.

The industry is facing severe competition not only from within the country but also from other countries like Bangladesh, Vietnam, China, Srilanka, Indonesia, etc. Running the industry is very difficult as the margins are very low.

The garment industry need not do any extra work to uplift the community or society, but should focus on employee welfare to ensure their development.

Several Non Governmental Organizations are involved actively in educating the workers regarding their labor rights and women in particular as to their rights against sexual and verbal harassment and maternity benefits.
