RMG industry needs to expedite compliance activities

The Ministry of Commerce will compel apparel factory owners, with support of the Ministry of Labour, to accelerate their compliance activities such as social and environmental compliance, eco-efficiency and occupational health and safety of workers.
In this regard, the Ministry of Commerce will write a letter to the Labour Ministry, as most of the buyers prefer compliance factories and are demanding to make the factories compliant, since long time.
A recommendation of a study titled 'compliance with environment regulations in the textile industry' turned the Ministry to take this step. The study has recommended the immediate appointment of a wage board to address the issue of RMG workers' wage adjustment, considering the rising inflation and increased costs of food and energy.
The study, which was conducted by a leading European research and consultancy company 'ECORYS' funded by the European Union, also said that complete social compliance has to be achieved within two years in all exporting factories.
It also recommended that the concerned agencies of government should carry intensive monitoring in all the garment factories to stop child labour. Chittagong as well as other garment zones need immediate establishment of central effluent treatment plant, emphasized the report.
