Garment workers resume work after Tet holidays

Nguyen Van Xe, Deputy Head of the City Department of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs (DoLISA), stated that subsequent to the Lunar New Year, around 90 percent of the workers who were on leave for the occasion, are now back in HCM City and have resumed their duties with their companies.

It was revealed by department of labour, invalids and social affairs, Cu Chi District that subsequent to Tet, over 80 percent of the workers in the district have resumed their duties, with other districts depicting similar or higher figures.

According to Nguyen Thi Dan, head of the DoLISA's Labour and Salary Office, during the initial two months of current year there were fewer strikes in the city as compared to previous years, as bonus was paid to many of the workers prior to the Tet and also they were satisfied with their salaries.

Across the City, 21 strikes took place during the month of January, she said.

Xe, while speaking at a meeting at HCM City, said that, in spite of the fact that the employment service centres have procured jobs for 135,699 workers; the HCM city is still experiencing labour shortage.

Nguyen Thi Hong Bach, Head of the Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs Division in Binh Tan District, said that 11 firms out there still require over 5,150 workers, mainly manual labourers.

Representatives of DoLISA's division in Cu Chi District stated that the firms, who had formerly supplied workers to other areas, are now finding it difficult to meet demands of local companies.

Representatives of offices and employment service centres, complained that not many people were applying for jobs and that in order to find workers they have even got in touch with service centres in other provinces, but all in vain.
