Retail trade volume rises 0.8% in euro-zone

EUROSTAT released the retail trade volume for December 2005.

In December 2005, compared to December 2004, the volume of retail trade1 developed by 0.8 percent in the euro-zone and by 2.3 percent in the EU25. Compared to November 2005, the retail sales index rose by 0.1 percent in the euro-zone and 0.4 percent in the EU25.

Among the Member States for which data are available, total retail trade rose in Latvia (+23.9 percent), Lithuania (+16.1 percent), Slovenia (+12.4 percent), Sweden (+10.8 percent), Denmark (+5.9 percent), Finland (+5.6 percent), the United Kingdom (+4.7 percent), Slovakia (+4.6 percent), Poland (+4.3 percent), France (+2.1 percent), Portugal (+1.9 percent), Belgium (+0.8 percent) and Luxembourg (+0.2 percent), while it remained unchanged in Spain. A fall was recorded in Germany (-1.8 percent).

The average volume of retail trade index for 2005, compared to 2004, increased by 0.8 percent in the euro-zone and by 1.6 percent in the EU25.

Among the Member States for which data are available, total retail trade increased in Slovenia (+2.9 percent), Latvia (+2.5 percent), Belgium (+2.3 percent), Luxembourg (+2.1 percent), the United Kingdom (+1.5 percent), Finland (+1.1 percent), Portugal (+0.9 percent), France (+0.7 percent), Lithuania (+0.5 percent) and Sweden (+0.3 percent), while it remained unchanged in Denmark. Decreases were recorded in Slovakia (-1.9 percent), Germany and Poland (both -1.4 percent) and Spain (-0.3 percent).
