Dollar General receives grants worth $1.79mn to help people literacy skills

Reinforcing its commitment to help people gain basic literacy skills, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation today announced it has awarded grants worth $1.79 million.

More than 230 nonprofit organizations in communities served by Discount retailer Dollar General received grants this year from the Foundation. The grants provide program support to nonprofit efforts to reach low-level literacy adults and their families. Adult basic education, GED preparation, English as a second language, family literacy and workforce literacy are among the initiatives that will benefit from these grants.

"Our company's mission to serve others extends into the communities our employees and customers call home," said Dollar General CEO David Perdue. "This year's grants, which are worth over $1.79 million, reflect the generosity of our customers and the strength of Dollar General's commitment to help our neighbors take a major step toward improving the quality of their lives."

The Dollar General Literacy Foundation accepts proposals on an annual basis. The company will begin soliciting 2006 proposals online on January 3, 2006.
