Retail sales in Central London during July were 8.9 percent lower, on a like-for-like basis, than in July 2004. This compares with a 3.6 percent increase in June 2005.

July's fall was the worst ever since the data began in October 2002 and comes after several difficult months for Central London retailers.

In the three-months to the end of July, like for like sales fell by 0.4 percent.

The London bombings hit trade hard on the 7th and 21st of July. Sales recovered a little but continued to be depressed by tube disruption, numerous security alerts and consumer anxiety.

The sharp reduction in Central London like for like sales in July compares with a smaller decline of 1.9 percent for the UK as a whole.
