Seasonally-adjusted US CPI-U up 0.3% in Jan, apparel index falls

The US consumer price index for all urban consumers (CPI-U) increased by 0.3 per cent in January this year on a seasonally-adjusted basis, after rising by 0.2 per cent in December, according to the US Bureau of Labour Statistics (BLS).

Over the last 12 months, the all items index increased by 3.1 per cent before seasonal adjustment—a smaller increase than the 3.4-per cent increase for the 12 months ending December 2023. The energy index fell by 0.9 per cent over the month.

The index for all items less food and energy rose by 0.4 per cent in January. The index for apparel decreased over the month.

The energy index decreased by 4.6 per cent for the 12 months ending January.
