UK CPI up 4% in 12 months to Dec 2023; CPI for clothing-footwear 6.4%

The UK consumer price index (CPI) rose by 4 per cent in the 12 months to December last year, up from 3.9 per cent in November, according to the Office of National Statistics (ONS). It was for the first time that the rate increased since February last year.

The CPI for clothing and footwear in December last year was 6.4 per cent on a 12-month basis and 0.4 per cent on a monthly basis.

On a monthly basis, CPI rose by 0.4 per cent in December, the same rate as in December 2022.

Core CPI (excluding energy, food, alcohol and tobacco) rose by 5.1 per cent in the 12 months to December last year, the same rate as in November, and down from a recent high of 7.1 per cent in May last year, which was the highest recorded since March 1992.

The annual rate for CPI for goods slowed from 2 per cent to 1.9 per cent.
