German discount grocer Lidl aims to create 500 jobs in Scotland with its plan to open 12 stores there. It already has 98 shops there, with construction under way in Dumbarton, Dundee, East Kilbride, Cowdenbeath and Larkhall. Its most recent store opened in Paisley while existing shops in Alloa and Bathgate will relocate as part of its regeneration programme.

Lidl is also aiming to have a new regional distribution centre at Eurocentral, North Lanarkshire, to be fully operational by November. This would replace the existing warehouse in Livingston, according to British media reports.

The company opened its very first store in Scotland 25 years ago and employs more than 2200 people there now.

The development comes a month after Lidl revealed plans to invest £500 million for an expansion program in London over the next five years, which includes the first ever central London store on Tottenham Court Road. The investment scheme is expected to create around 1500 new jobs in the capital city. (DS)
