India aims to be self-reliant in silk, says Hanumanthappa

Central Silk Board has several plans to promote sericulture, stated Hanumanthappa, President of the Board.
He said that Board provided subsidy for Malbari plantation, fertilisers, laboratory, research, marketing and more.
The Board has a project lined up worth Rs183 crore, of which, Rs68 crore is to be spent on research and technology, and Rs112 crore for development grants that would be given by the State government, Hanumanthappa added.
Total 1.17 lakh metric tons of silk was produced in the world, out of which India claimed 16,500 metric tons and it should produce an additional 26,000 tons of silk yarns to meet its needs.
He said in the international and Indian markets, the value of silk yarn was Rs1,700 per kg.
From the performance of Indian silk industry, Hanumanthappa expected India to be self-reliant in silk by the end of 11th Five Year Plan.
