India's first silk park will be established in Malda, West Bengal, for which a 40 acre land has already been assigned. The project, that was earlier decided to be implemented in Bangalore, has been authorized a total of Rs50 crore.

The district of Malda has been known for producing nearly 1200 meter silk in a year on a 20,000 acre land. Most importantly, 80 percent of the project's investment will be covered by the central government while the remaining will be borne by the state itself.

Since local silk used by weavers of Benaras, Bhagalpur and Chennai add a brand name to the finished products, the Silk Park to be set up in Malda will enable craftsmen to directly produce branded products.

Madhughat and Ramchandrapur in Malda are recognized as two very significant areas producing 80 per cent of the state's silk.
