  • In 2023, the Yangtze River's clean energy corridor in China, with six hydropower stations, generated over 276 billion kWh electricity, marking a 5.34 per cent increase from the previous year.
  • This production saved about 83 million tonnes of coal and prevented over 200 million tonnes of CO2 emissions.
  • The bridges energy from China's west to the east.
China's landmark clean energy project along the Yangtze River, comprising six colossal hydropower stations, has reported an increase in electricity production in 2023, according to China Yangtze Power Co, Ltd (CYPC), the operator of these power stations. The clean energy corridor successfully generated over 276 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity last year, marking a 5.34 per cent increase compared to the previous year.

This achievement is a crucial step towards reducing reliance on fossil fuels, as the generated electricity corresponds to saving approximately 83 million tonnes of standard coal. Furthermore, it has contributed to environmental protection efforts by preventing the emission of over 200 million tonnes of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

Strategically positioned, these hydropower plants facilitate the transition of electricity from the abundant energy resources in China's western regions to the high-demand areas in the east. The total capacity of these installations is estimated to be around 71.7 million kilowatts, according to Chinese media reports.
