Sweden extends cooperation to Bangladesh for RMG sector sustainability

Sweden has extended a collaborative hand to Bangladesh, proposing a joint effort to foster sustainability within the garment sector. This proposal came forth during a meeting between Swedish ambassador to Bangladesh, Alexandra Berg Von Linde, and state minister for Power, Energy, and Mineral Resources, Nasrul Hamid, held at the latter’s ministry office in the secretariat, in capital Dhaka recently.

The Swedish envoy delved into avenues for contributing more to Bangladesh’s renewable energy development, aligning with discussions on mutual interests during the meeting. Expressing Sweden’s longstanding engagement in Bangladesh garment sector, she highlighted the involvement of Swedish companies like H&M, IKEA, and Lindex spanning nearly four decades.

In response, Nasrul Hamid extended a warm welcome, affirming Bangladesh’s earnest efforts toward renewable energy promotion. He apprised the ambassador of ongoing initiatives, notably the generation of 12,047MW of electricity from renewable sources, including solar power projects.

Nasrul Hamid also underscored the need for further exploration in wind power, emphasising the country’s target of sourcing 40 per cent of its electricity from clean energy by 2041.

However, he acknowledged the substantial investment needed for renewable energy and outlined the importance of bolstering infrastructure, particularly in smart grid and transmission systems, for modernisation and expansion.
