American multinational clothing company HanesBrands Inc has revealed that it has made significant progress towards its 2025 and 2030 global sustainability goals. Around 70 per cent of the cotton used by the company is sustainably grown and it has implemented projects to reduce single-use plastic by 34 per cent and packaging weight by 11 per cent.

HanesBrands’ product goals included using 100 per cent recycled/biodegradable polyester and sustainably sourced cotton, reducing packaging weight by 25 per cent, and eliminating single-use plastics (what remains must be commonly recyclable or compostable), according to its 2022 Sustainability Summary Report.

The clothing company’s planet goals involved setting science-based targets to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, reducing energy and water use by 25 per cent, moving to 100 per cent renewable electricity, and taking landfill waste to zero.

HanesBrands achieved a 30 per cent reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions and has submitted emissions reduction targets through the Science-Based Target Initiative. About 92 per cent of its waste was diverted from landfills and nearly 50 per cent of the electricity consumed was generated from renewable sources.

“We are proud of our longstanding history of ethical and responsible business practices and our ongoing commitment to ‘Do What’s Right’,” said Chris Fox, chief sustainability officer, HanesBrands. “Our commitment to sustainability goes back decades, and we look forward to continuing the hard work toward achieving our ambitious 2025 and 2030 sustainability goals.”

“HanesBrands continues to build on our leadership position in sustainability by improving the lives of people, protecting the planet and creating more sustainable products,” said Steve Bratspies, chief executive officer, HanesBrands. “Our global associates are passionate about strengthening the communities where we live and work.
