American specialty materials company Eastman has signed the Microfibre 2030 commitment, a global initiative to minimise the impact of microfibres on the natural environment. The commitment was established by The Microfibre Consortium, a non-profit group working to develop science-based solutions for the textile industry to minimise fibre fragmentation.

The commitment forms an aligned agenda for the global textile sector, working to reduce fibre fragmentation impact from textiles to the natural environment by 2030. The Microfibre 2030 roadmap sets key cross-industry targets to focus and facilitate the essential collaborative action required on fibre fragmentation, Eastman said in a press release.

The commitment aims to involve more than 250 signatories, committing to a sustained program of collaborative and proactive cross-industry work aligned to the Microfibre 2030 roadmap. The development is designed to put greater focus on the issue of fibre fragmentation and encourage all areas of the apparel industry to work together in addressing the topic.

Through the company's Naia brand of cellulosic fibres, Eastman works closely with global, sustainability-focused organisations on the front lines of uniting thought leaders, manufacturers, brands, NGOs, academics and municipalities, and others to collectively build a more sustainable textile industry.
