Mr Lin included that while safeguard provisions were limiting the growth in China's clothing exports to North America and Europe as a result of the lifting of quotas, there was still steady growth in apparel exports. And this doesn't account for domestic demand in China which is already growing by 10 per cent a year, on top of any international gains.
The possibilities for wool are immeasurable. The innovative fabrics being developed through new processes and the ability to blend wool with other fibres are opening up new markets every day. Fashions change constantly, and its versatility now that wool is no longer just a winter fabric is prompting a lot more Chinese and Hong Kong manufacturers to use it.
The Hong Kong Textiles Council is an umbrella body that advises the Hong Kong government and Beijing officials regarding the industry and trade issues, and works closely with importers and exporters around the world. Sixty percent of the world's garments are manufactured within a five hour radius of Hong Kong, including in the Shenzen and Guandong provinces of China.
Research & development organization Australian Wool Innovation Limited (AWI) is that works with woolgrowers, researchers, processors and manufacturers. The company's activities are financed from Federal budget allocations and wool industry levies. The Federal core allocation to AWI in 2003-2004 is around $14 million.
