German based engineering & contracting group Lurgi AG together with partners Eastman Chemical Company, Kingsport (USA) and SK Chemicals Co. Ltd. Seoul (Korea) successfully commissioned the world's largest E PTA plant in Shaoxing (China).
E PTA Technology now also prevailing in China
The plant is designed for an annual capacity of 660 000 tons of terephthalic acid and was built on behalf of Zhejiang Hualian Sunshine Petrochemical Co. Ltd. Very quickly, on-spec product was produced in the plant 26 months after the order was awarded to Lurgi.
Terephthalic acid is a base chemical for the production of PET bottles, PET containers, polyester fibers of all types as well as other engineered plastics. Eastman polymer-grade terephthalic acid (E PTA) can be used for all these applications. Compared with the conventional PTA technology the E PTA process offers the advantages of lower investment costs as well as substantially lower production costs, facts that convinced Zhejiang Hualian Sunshine Petrochemical Co. Ltd. to choose the EPTA technology.
The successful commissioning of this plant marks the starting point for the breakthrough of the E PTA technology in China. This will appreciably increase the availability of high-grade E PTA product as an alternative to conventional PTA on the Chinese market.
The alliance forged by Eastman and Lurgi with its cooperation partner SK Chemicals forms a strong association that provides the expertise in the fields of engineering, technology, production and processing to final products. he fields of engineering, technology, production and processing to final products.
Metallgesellschaft AG, now trading under mg technologies ag, founded Metallurgische Gesellschaft on 5 February 1897. The middle part of the new company's name became its cable address.
The name "Lurgi" spread throughout the world and became a global synonym for high-tech services.
