The Standing Board on Safeguards has approved a recommendation from the DG (Safeguards), to levy the provisional safeguard duty on the import of caustic soda lye for a period of three months.

Last month, DG (Safeguards) had submitted a preliminary report of an investigation concerning the rising import of caustic soda lye and its impact on the domestic industry and the same has been forwarded to the Finance Ministry for approval.

It may be recalled that the Alkali Manufacturers Association of India (AMAI) had filed an application before the DG (Safeguards), to impose safeguard duty on imports of Caustic Soda to protect producers of the chemical after which it initiated an investigation.

On October 15, DG (Safeguards), recommended imposition of provisional safeguard duty for a period of 200 days on imports of Caustic Soda in Lye form, into India to protect the interests of domestic industry.

It stated that as imports from nations other than China, Indonesia, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Thailand did not exceed 3 percent, individually, the import of products from those other than the above will not attract safeguard duty.
