“I have come to realize that my research into our roots and culture has been a catharsis and a yearning for the healing of our past. Some people try to achieve this with politics or debate, I do it with questioning and clothes.
I want to know where I fit in. I want people to be exposed to different local people's history and so particularly when I do shows the clothes reflect strong South African cultural influences and I hope this inspires those who see them to also read up and travel around our country and be interested in each other and to be excited about elevating our land in all aspects of life.”
Delegates will get to explore the creative research process with Amanda at the Arts & Culture Fashion Seminar on Friday 29 July – booking is essential.
Amanda Laird Cherry's business philosophy is to design and create clothes that fit and reflect our South African culture and climate, whilst maintaining an international relevance. ”It's a case of making ranges that South Africans can relate to, perhaps be proud of and enjoy wearing”.
Amanda's designs are influenced by all things aesthetic. She likes to research pockets ofcultural modes of dress, adornment or behaviour, such as inititiation rituals, mapansula, and traditional healers.
