Rural handicrafts fair SARAS-2007 gets colourful opening

Till now a total of 66 SARAS fairs have generated a sales turnover of Rs.76,19,49,623 crores, Dr. Singh added. He said that so far 11 States have provided necessary marketing infrastructure at State Capitals and the remaining States are also working in this direction.

Besides the renovation work at the site of Annual trade fair at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi, shops for rural artisans at Rajiv Gandhi Bhawan, New Delhi and at the venue of sales emporia's at Baba Kharag Singh Marg New Delhi are also being established in addition the procurement of land at Pritampura and Jasola in Delhi, the minister added.

He also appreciated Council for Advancement of People's Action and Rural Technology (CAPART) in providing necessary help to the rural artisans through a widespread network of NGOs.

Earlier, welcoming the gathering Shri Chandra Sekhar Sahu, the Minister of State in the Rural Development Ministry referred the ambitious BHARAT NIRMAN, a Prime Ministers' visionary project, to bring an all round change in present rural economic scenario and said that the rapid growth of GDP will be meaningless if it is not translated into the benefit of rural India

The present fair named as SAWAN SARAS will continue till 24th of this month aims at facilitating the SGSY beneficiaries, rural artisans, Craftsmen, SHGs and NGOs to exhibit and sell their products and provide them the opportunity for additional income and exposure and interaction on a large scale.

This exhibition-cum-sales fair under the brand name of SARAS will display a wide range of products manufactured by the rural artisans, Craftsmen and beneficiaries of Self Help Groups from all over the country.

It creates a unique platform for developing linkages with the buyers and customers and also provides opportunity to deal directly with the buyers avoiding the middlemen. Around 190 Stalls and 500 Swarojgaries from 20 States from all over India will be participating in the fair.

Some of special attractions for this SARAS are Metal work products from Madhya Pradesh, Sambalpur, Saris from Orissa, Wood-works from Tamil Nadu, Bamboo Craft from Tripura, Madhubani paintings from Bihar, Terracotta's from Chattisgarh and Shawls & Carpets from Jammu and Kashmir etc.

Another major attraction of the mega event is the presentation of divergent cultural programmes of different States throughout the fair.
