260,000 tonnes expected cotton harvest in Azerbaijan
Azerbaijan has planted cotton on 132,500 hectares in 22 regions this year and 260,000 tonnes of cotton are likely to be harvested by the end of the season, agriculture minister Inam Karimov told a meeting recently in the Salyan region. Large-scale measures are being implemented to provide farmers with fertilizers, cars and equipment, he said.

The 2016 cotton harvest was 90,000 tonnes and 207,000 tonnes were harvested last year.

Agro-technical work on cotton growing is currently under way, an Azeri newspaper quoted the minister as saying.

A cotton processing plant in Ujar with an annual capacity of 40,000 tonnes is nearing completion, he said. The plant will also produce 20,000 tonnes of cottonseed oil and 2,500-3,000 tonnes of cottonseed.

Construction of nine plants began in the Light Industry Park in Mingachevir and two of these turned operational last February, while the construction of the other seven will be completed before 2021, he said.

The country aims at raising the production of cotton to 500,000 tonnes by 2022. (DS)
