One in seven unemployed in the Netherlands in the second quarter (Q2) this year was without a job for a long term, i.e. for 12 months or more, according to Statistics Netherlands (CBS). There were 348,000 unemployed in the country in Q2 2023, indicating unemployment has more than halved over the past decade.

The share was significantly higher in the same quarter of 2013: one in three. In 2023, unemployed people were relatively likely to be out of work for only a short time.

The number of long-term unemployed declined relatively sharply: from 240,000 in Q2 2013 to 47,000 in 2023. The number of people who have been unemployed for only a short time (less than 12 months) decreased from 484,000 to 288,000 in the same period.

On an average, the total group of unemployed people is younger than ten years ago. This rejuvenation is only visible among the unemployed who have only been out of work for a short time (less than 12 months). In Q2 2023, 48 per cent of them were under 25, while this share was still 38 per cent in 2013.

Long-term unemployed people, on an average, are older than those who have been unemployed for a short time. Moreover, the share of over-45s among the long-term unemployed has increased slightly over the past decade. The age distribution of the total population aged 15 to 74 years has not changed much during this period.

In Q2 2023, unemployed people, on an average, had higher education degrees than a decade ago. The share of highly educated people also increased among the total population, but less sharply than among the unemployed: from 28 per cent in Q2 2013 to 36 per cent in Q2 2023.
