The All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA) will collaborate with the European Union (EU) to ensure sustainability and growth of the textile industry in the country, APTMA Punjab chairman Adil Bashir recently told the EU’s ambassador designate to Pakistan Androulla Kaminara during the latter’s visit to the former’s office in Lahore.

APTMA has taken an active part in securing EU’s generalised system of preferences plus (GSP+) status for Pakistan in 2014 to widen market access available to Pakistan, he said.

Since the grant of GSP Plus status in 2014, Pakistan’s exports to the EU have increased by 62 per cent. But stagnation in Pakistan’s exports to the EU in the last three years was due to relocation of buying houses of major retailers and brands to other competing countries and the high cost of manufacturing in Pakistan.

The industry aims to double textile and clothing exports to $26 billion in the next five years with an investment of $ 7 billion by setting up 1,000 garmenting units which that would result in the creation of direct job opportunities for a million, he added.
