Exporters from the Blue Pacific Continent—covering 18 island nations and territories in the Oceania—can now apply for the Pacific Trade Invest New Zealand’s (PTI NZ) 2023 Freight Support Package. Applications for this freight subsidy package are open between March 1 and April 30. Applicants will be informed of the decision by the end of May.

PTI NZ would also consider freight costs for import of raw materials as being eligible for the package as long as the other eligibility criteria are met, PTI NZ trade commissioner Glynis Miller was quoted as saying by a Fijian newspaper.

The Pacific Islands Export Survey 2020 conducted by PTI revealed that freight costs are one of the top three barriers to export faced by Pacific businesses, and this situation was exasperated by the disruptions to shipping induced by COVID-19, she said.

“Tailoring the support towards e-commerce businesses would in turn foster innovation and stimulate long-term competitiveness in the Pacific region,” Miller added.
