Cambodia permits building of 5 power plants with 520 MW capacity

The Cambodian government has granted approval for the building of five additional power plants, collectively capable of generating 520 MW. The approval of these power plants is expected to further strengthen Cambodia’s energy infrastructure and improve access to electricity in the country.

The projects include a 70-MW hydropower plant called Stung Russey Chrum Kandal and a 100-MW hydropower plant called Stung Veal Thmor Kambot, both of which will be combined into a single project in Koh Kong province. The other three projects will be solar power plants—a 150-MW station in Pursat province, an 80-MW plant in Prey Veng province, and two 60-MW plants in Kampong Chhnang and Svay Rieng provinces.

The government is anticipated to collect approximately $322.8 million in tax revenue over the course of the operation of the five projects, according to local media reports.

In 2022, the Electricity Authority of Cambodia (EAC) revealed that Cambodia’s energy supply had increased by 2.6 per cent, reaching 4,495 MW as compared to the previous year. Furthermore, over 98 per cent of the nation’s 14,168 villages had access to electricity as of that year.
