The US remains the top destination for exports through PAS, absorbing 37 per cent of the total 395,145 TEU exports, with the European Union following at 28 per cent. Meanwhile, imports through PAS were predominantly from China, representing 66 per cent of the total 402,633 TEUs.
In contrast, the Phnom Penh Autonomous Port (PPAP), Cambodia's second-largest container hub, experienced a 5 per cent decrease in container throughput, recording 396,225 TEUs last year, according to Cambodian media reports.
Significant developments are underway at PAS, with the completion of the new container terminal's first phase slated for 2025. This expansion will allow the docking of larger container vessels, with capacities of up to 60,000 DWT (approximately 4,000 TEUs). Subsequent phases of the expansion project, set for completion in 2028 and 2029, will elevate the port's capacity to accommodate vessels of up to 120,000 DWT (approximately 10,000 TEUs) and 160,000 DWT (15,000 TEUs) respectively, broadening Cambodia's shipping network to include Europe and North America.
