Cambodia commenced construction of a new container terminal today at the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port, with the aim to make it a hub port by 2029. Prime Minister Hun Sen, who presided over the ground-breaking ceremony, stated that the port’s development will support the kingdom’s economic growth and rising international trade.

In addition, he stated that the port expansion initiative would facilitate the docking of sizable container vessels, leading to a substantial decrease in Cambodia’s sea freight expenses, ultimately luring investors and expediting the nation’s economic growth, according to media reports.

Sun Chanthol, Cambodia’s minister of public works and transport said that the new terminal would be built in three phases. The first phase will include constructing an onshore general cargo terminal and a 350-meter-long, 14.5-metre-deep container terminal that can handle ships with 60,000 deadweight tonnages (DWT), or those carrying 4,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs). The estimated cost of the first phase construction is $275 million, and it is expected to be completed by 2026.

The second and third phases, which are estimated to cost $698 million, will respectively commence in 2025 and 2026 and conclude in 2028 and 2029, said Chanthol. Both phases are expected to cost $698 million in total. Currently, the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port can handle 700,000 TEUs annually. After the three-phase construction is completed, it will be able to handle 1.4 million TEUs in 2026 and 2.58 million TEUs in 2029.

The Sihanoukville Autonomous Port is Cambodia’s only international and commercial deep seaport. The port is estimated to have generated $86 million in revenue in 2022.
