Reiterating that cancelling tariff hikes is a key condition for both sides to reach an agreement, Beijing yesterday said the degree of cancelation should reflect the importance of a ‘phase one’ deal. China has repeatedly stressed the trade war was triggered by US tariff hikes and should end by cancelling those, said ministry of commerce spokesperson Gao Feng.

Removal of tariff hikes is in the interests of both producers and consumers, of China and the United States, and of the world as a whole, a Chinese official news agency cited Gao as saying at a press conference.

Both sides are holding in-depth discussions on this issue, Gao said.

China is ready to work with the United States to properly address each other's core concerns on the basis of equality and mutual respect to create conditions for reaching the ‘phase one’ agreement, he added.
