Nearly 44 per cent of the total weight of rail freight was carried in containers. Container freight saw a significant uptick of 4.7 per cent to 19.6 million tonnes compared to 2021.
The total number of twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) also experienced a rise of 3.7 per cent. Germany and Italy were the major contributors to this increase, with flows of container goods to and from these countries rising by 12 per cent and 5.6 per cent, respectively, as per CBS.
Most of the rail freight, amounting to 27.2 million tonnes, was loaded in the Netherlands and unloaded abroad, marking a 5.6 per cent increase from 2021. Notably, coal transport to Germany saw a substantial increase of 27.8 per cent. Meanwhile, inbound freight from Germany was at 10.5 million tonnes, showing a 2.8 per cent increase mainly consisting of container freight (up 2.9 per cent) and bulk agricultural, forestry, and fishery products (up 35.6 per cent), including goods like wheat and maize.
In addition, rail freight in transit and inland rail transport both saw growth last year, with increases of 3.1 per cent and 0.6 per cent, respectively, indicating the robust health of Dutch railway transport.
