The European Union (EU) and Moldova recently extended the validity of their Road Transport Agreement till December 31, 2025. The agreement, signed on June 29, 2022, aims at helping Moldova access world markets by facilitating transit through EU countries and also further developing its links with the EU market.

The agreement, put in place following the loss of important transport routes passing through Ukraine's Black Sea ports and export markets to the east of Ukraine caused by the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, has substantially increased exports by road from Moldova to the EU, a press release from the bloc noted.

It was scheduled to expire on June 30 this year.

The agreement has also strengthened the EU-Ukraine Solidarity Lanes, by facilitating road transport between the EU and Moldova, a key country of transit for Ukrainian exports and imports.

In May 2022, the European Commission had launched the Solidarity Lanes Action?Plan to establish alternative logistics?routes via rail, road and inland waterways, known as Solidarity Lanes.

Exports by road from Moldova to the EU increased by 27 per cent in volume in the third quarter (Q3) of 2022 and by 35 per cent in Q3 2023 compared to Q3 2021.

The EU’s exports by road to Moldova increased by 30 per cent in value from Q3 2021 to Q3 2022 and stabilised around the same value in Q3 2023.
