Fairtrade India celebrates 'Power of You' week
Nov '16
Fairtrade India is celebrating Fairtrade Week till November 27, 2016. This year's theme 'Power of You', celebrates the power of consumers' decision on the lives of farmers and workers. The week began with the launch of the Fairtrade store and Power of You campaign on Amazon India. India's first pilot project for ethical consumption has also been launched.
"This Fairtrade Week marks the completion of three years of Fairtrade India. I am really excited about the future of Fairtrade in India as more and more businesses are committing to source on Fairtrade terms and there is also a rise in the number of people and institutions demanding Fairtrade products from their brands, retailers and vendors," said Abhishek Jani, CEO Fairtrade India.
Supporting the cause, Apurva Kothari, founder of No Nasties, said "We have been committed to the fair trade movement from its inception. Our common goal is to give consumers an easy and transparent way to connect with farmers and to make a difference by way of their purchases. We continue to expand its product range and this new collection (Apiary) offers jackets, hoodies, skirts and tank tops, all made with 100 per cent organic, fair trade cotton."
Fairtrade also includes Fairtrade@Work where the workplaces will be linked with Fairtrade producers and traders for ethical business practices. "In many ways, Fairtrade Week showcases the amazing coalition of schools, universities, NGOs, workplaces, brands, retailers, cafes and hotels that have joined the rapidly growing Fairtrade movement in India. We are celebrating this week to make a tangible difference in the lives of our farmers and workers by making a simple switch to Fairtrade food and fashion," added Jani.
Fairtrade India is non-profit organisation that works with farmers and workers who grow our food and clothes. It offers producers a better deal and improved terms of trade. It's about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers. Fairtrade India works with producers who grow a variety of items such as coffee, tea, rice, spices, cocoa and cotton.
Fairtrade gives people an opportunity to celebrate Fairtrade in schools, universities and localities by setting up a series of events that spread the message of Fairtrade and appreciate the farmers and workers who grow food and the clothes. The pilot has been set up to show people how easy it is to incorporate Fairtrade in their daily lives.
Aiming to create awareness about the true cost of fast fashion and the impact of choices on the people working in the global fashion industry, Fashion Revolution India in association with the Power of You campaign is organising screenings of the 'True Cost' movie by Andrew Morgan across Mumbai, Bangalore and Chennai. Fashion Revolution India is a non-profit organisation. (RR)
