GCCI to replicate Amul model in textile industry

With a view to ensure better monetary returns for stakeholders across the textile value chain, the Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) has decided to replicate the Amul cooperative model in the textile sector. GCCI expects this adaption to increase the value addition in the state which exports low value products and imports expensive goods.

A decrease in the land holdings of farmers is resulting in the decline in productivity and increase in costs, said Shailesh Patwari, president, GCCI while speaking to media persons about the industrial expo Farm to Fashion. He added that productivity can be increased and cost can be reduced by bringing a group of farmers together and optimally using the available resources.

Gujarat accounts for close to 33 per cent of India’s total cotton production, but lags behind in producing value added products. The state’s cotton production is about 570 kg per hectare as opposed to 2000 kg per hectare in Australia and 1200 kg per hectare in China. Value additions can help increase the state’s earnings by up to 10 times, said secretary of GCCI, Saurin Parikh.

Patwari also spoke about the unhealthy competition between states and the need to introduce ‘one country, one policy’ for the industrial sector. He said that the introduction of the incentive of Rs 3 per unit of electricity in Maharashtra can render textile units in Gujarat as non-competitive. This has led to units availing bank loans, which may turn bad causing a lose-lose situation for all.

Farm to Fashion: Indian Textile Global Summit 2018 is a three-day premiere summit to be held from May 4-6, 2018. It will provide a common platform for the entire value chain of textiles to deliberate and develop a vision for the industry for 2030.

The global summit being organised by GCCI in association with Maskati Cloth Market Mahajan (MCMM), aims to achieve the intangible aspects of quality communications within the textile industry players. It will provide a great opportunity for networking of more than 150 exhibitors, over 1,000 delegates, government officials and various representatives of the textile industry from various parts of the country.
