Internet user base in India to reach 500 mn by Jun: experts
The internet user base in India will reach 500 million by this June and by 2020, the country will have more than 700 million users of smart phones, the preferred device for online shopping by then, accounting for 70 per cent of total online shopping, experts said at the seventh edition of the India Internet Day conference in New Delhi last week.

The conference, organised by TiE Delhi-National Capital Region, a network of successful entrepreneurs and professionals, was attended by over 500, according to Indian media reports.

The Unified Payments Interface (UPI) clocked 178.05 million transactions worth ₹ 24,172.6 crore in March this year, said Dilip Asbe, managing director and CEO of the National payment Council of India (NPCI).

A recent report titled ‘Mobile Internet in India 2017’, published jointly by the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) and KANTAR-IMRB, also said the number of mobile Internet users increased by 17.22 per cent from December 2016 to reach 456 million by December 2017 and is likely to reach 478 million by June this year.

There were 291 million urban mobile Internet users and 187 million rural users in the country as on December 2017, the report estimated.

It, however, predicted a slowdown in Internet penetration in urban India where 59 per cent penetration is already over. Growth is expected in rural areas which have witnessed just 18 per cent mobile Internet penetration. (DS)
