Kanihama in Kashmir’s Budgam district is being developed as a handloom village, district development commissioner Tariq Hussain Ganaie told a recent meeting to review the formulation of the action plan and work distribution for the project, which has been approved by the central textiles ministry. The village is famous for Pashmina and Kani shawl weaving.

Ganaie said the village, being home to 500 Crewel and Sozni artisans who are famous for their embroidery work, is a suitable place for having around 250 handloom weaver households besides, according to Kashmiri media reports.

Facilities, including looms, handlooms, handicraft showrooms and design training centres, will be available in the village.
