Creating a new hurdle to a no-deal Brexit, Prime Minister Theresa May’s government has suffered 303 to 296 defeat in Parliament. MPs voted in favour of not leaving the EU without an accord. Now, the government would need a parliamentary approval if the UK is to leave the EU without a deal. MPs are likely to debate further on the Brexit issue.

The original vote on Brexit was scheduled for December 11, 2018 but was postponed by May in view of opposition from both Tory and Labour MPs. The topic will be taken up for discussion today, followed by a likely vote on January 15, UK media reports said.

Last year, the UK Parliament had passed a resolution that the UK would leave the EU on March 29, 2019, i.e. two years after negotiations to exit the EU began.

As per the agreement finalised by the EU and the UK in November last year, rights of EU citizens residing in the UK as well as British nationals staying across Europe would be guaranteed until the end of 2020. However, this and other points in the agreement (including a declaration of future trade and security relations) can come into force only after the British Parliament approves the agreement as the EU Parliament has already voted in favour of the deal.
