Nguyen Ngoc Lam, Deputy Chairman of Vietnam Leather and Footwear Association (LEFASO) requested the European Commission (EC) to hold off its anti-dumping investigation of Vietnamese footwear manufacturers.
Giving reasons for suspending investigation, Nguyen Ngoc Lam informed media in Ha Noi that Vietnamese footwear manufacturers were not responsible for any dumping of their products in the European markets as about 80 percent of them worked under sub-contracts for foreign companies, hence, they were not authorized to fix prices on production or export.
An official of LEFASO added that the other manufacturers that exported directly to the EU markets were unable to affect EU footwear manufacturers, as Vietnamese counterparts were small-sized and apply inferior technology, with low output and poor competitiveness.
Describing the petition registered by the European Confederation of Footwear Industries as unfair, LEFASO official also stated that though the lawsuit is under investigation, it has shrunk the number of contracts from foreign partners.
Some international footwear companies are thinking of shifting their Vietnamese units to other countries instead of facing the EU's anti-dumping levy.
