The National Union of Textile, Garment and Tailoring Workers of Nigeria (NUTGTWN) has requested Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola to intervene in the matter of extended closure of United Nigeria Textiles (UNT) Plc, located in the Ikorodu area by the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA).
NUTGTWN, which is affiliated to the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), has said that UNT Plc, which serves as a source of direct employment for more than 3,000 workers, has been closed down by LASEPA officials since July 26 for polluting the community river.
In his petition, Issa Aremu, General Secretary of NUTGTWN, urged the Governor to mediate in the matter so as to ensure urgent resolution to the issue and quick reopening of the closed textile unit.
Mr. Aremu said that their Union had time and again recognized and praised the Governor for the persistent efforts of his administration in multi-faceted development of the State.
