Konor of Agotime State, Nene Nuer Keteku III, has urged the Government to provide the kente weavers in the country with financial assistance so as to assist the progress and growth of the local industry.
The Konor said in spite of the fact that the kente industry has placed Ghana on the global chart, majority of the kente weavers have not been able to rise above poverty levels, particularly due to inadequate financial support.
Addressing a gathering of the heads and residents of Agotime Traditional area organized to mark 2011's Agbamevorza (Kente Festival) at Kpetoe in the Volta Region, Nene Keteku said Government's assistance would aid sustenance of the kente industry and also bring down the redundancy ratio and proportion of migration of youth to city areas.
Cultural and artistic values of the Ewe kente were well exhibited at the event which had “Conserving our cultural heritage” as its theme.
Talking about the theme, Nene Keteku cited Ewe kente as the country's best kente and hence urged the stakeholders to help in its preservation.
He further said that besides simple “geometrical shaping”, the kind of kente also has distinctive features which bestow it with cultural and aesthetic significance.
The designs and images with special background bring out some special emotions and well illustrate some of the most basic human ideals, he added.
Nene Kente, however, sounded a caution that people involved in production of inferior quality kente cloth should discontinue doing so and said the concerned authorities are also taking steps to stop such practices.
