Analysis to circumvent WTO deal for RMG duty free access

Under the new WTO deal, Bangladesh will lose out on duty free access of Ready Made Garments (RMG) into US. Local RMG exporters and experts are looking out for avenues for access.
Some minor RMG products getting into US will only be possible if buyers relax their import policy.
The US buyers import RMG products under both 8 and 10 digit categories. But which category is suitable for Bangladesh, is still to be decided, said Research Director of the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD), Mustafizur Rahman.
Bangladesh would convey suitability of the proper digit to the US authorities at the first follow-up meeting of WTO Hong Kong Ministerial, scheduled for Geneva next year.
Access of some less important RMG products into US market under 10-digit might be suitable for Bangladesh as at least 16,000 products will come under import tariff line, said former President of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) Annisul Huq.
If the US keeps the import at 8-digit level then garment products will not have duty exemption, but other products will get its benefit, he added.
