The production of cotton in the southern African country of Zimbabwe is expected to rise in 2011-12 farming season.

In order to boost cotton production, the Cotton Company of Zimbabwe has increased its farmers' input credit scheme for the 2011-12 season by 30 percent. This year, 156,673 cotton growers would be contracted to participate in the scheme compared to last year's participation of 103,651 farmers.

Accordingly, the area under cotton is also expected to grow to 250,000 hectares as against an area of 208,422 hectares last season. Consequently, cotton production is targeted to increase to more than 300 million kg this season.

Zimbabwean farmers sold 249.9 million kg (551 million pounds) of cotton to traders by October 31 this year, compared to 93.4 million kg delivered by farmers during the corresponding period of previous season, registering an increase of 168 percent.
