Krystyna Hellstrom pens book on Indian 'Jaipur Quilts'

Sweden-based author Krystyna Hellstrom, who writes for interior design magazines, has written a book titled “Jaipur Quilts”.

The book, which was launched recently, celebrates the unique traditional craftsmanship and high utility of the exquisite 'Jaipur Razai'. The word 'razai' roughly translates to quilt and it usually has a cotton, silk or velvet cover, which is stuffed with cotton.

These quilts are used to provide warmth during winter seasons, primarily due the insulating effects of the large amount of air trapped in cotton.

The book mentions quilt designing in India as a blend of traditional values, interests and experience. It says quilts are pieces of history that has stories to be documented and preserved.

Jaipur, also called Pink City, is the capital of the desert State of Rajasthan in India. It reminds of royalty and tales of courage and battlefield valour; of vibrant colours illuminated against desert landscape; of art and aesthetics; and its friendly people.

Built in 1727 AD, the city of Jaipur, with its unique range of crafts, forts and culture, continues to attract tourists from all parts of the world even today.

The textile industry in Jaipur and Rajasthan has served as a source of inspiration to innumerable designers to create products that combine both artistic beauty and utility. The 'Jaipur Razai' is an excellent example as it combines artistic value with skilled craftsmanship.

Krystyna Hellstrom, who had studied in Italy and Sweden, wrote her thesis on 'Jaipur and Provencal Quilts'. She also worked for Emilio Pucci in his Florence, Italy-based fashion house, one of the best places in the world to gain knowledge about original design and exquisite textiles.
