New textile projects to go operational in Ethiopia

Ethiopian textile industry seems to be on an expansion drive and several textile projects and expansion programmes are likely to become operational this fiscal.
In all there are eight projects, including new and capacity expansion projects, involving an investment of more than 4.4 billion birr, which are likely to conclude this fiscal.
Five of the ongoing projects being constructed anew, with a total outlay of 3.4 billion birr, are likely to generate 3,000 new employment opportunities.
There are three other ongoing projects for capacity expansion of existing plants, involving a cost of over one billion birr, which are likely to generate 1,800 new employment opportunities.
According to the Ethiopian Textile Development Institute (TDI), the country exported around US$ 44 million worth of textile and textile products during the last six months, which is around US$ 23 million higher than the revenues generated through exports during the same period last year.
Kombolcha Textile Share Company, Aika Addis Textile and Investment Group, Elsie Addis Textile Factory, Almeda Textile, Ma Textile and Garment Factory and NovaStar Garment Plc were the major exporters of textile and textile products from the country over the past six months.
Ethiopian textile and textile products are mainly exported to China, Germany, Sudan, Belgium, Djibouti, Italy, United Kingdom, Turkey, UAE and the US.
