Australia could become the third largest raw cotton exporter; delegates at a conference were informed.

Senator Ludwig said that it was up to Australian cotton producers, as to how they dealt with the news of India banning exports of cotton from yesterday.

Ludwig was speaking at the opening address of a conference organized by the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences (ABARES).

It's a beautiful opportunity for Australian cotton growers and exporters to extract maximum mileage out of this Indian decision, he said.

Australian cotton exports are set to leap 89 percent in 2012 to a record 955,000 tons, which could make Australia one of the topmost global cotton exporters.

It is also set to produce a bumper cotton harvest of around 1.1 million tons in the current year, delegates at the conference were told.

The Agricultural Commodities Report has predicted that cotton exports will grow further by 12.5 percent in 2012-13, to 1.1 million tons.

If that happens, Australia will dethrone Uzbekistan to become the third-largest cotton exporter behind USA and India.
