Argentina's textile, garment imports surge

Argentina's imports of textiles and apparels grew to US$ 1.827 billion in 2011, showing a sharp 24.9 percent year-on-year increase, as per the data released by the Institute of Economic Research (IES).
However, the total value of imports of items that are subjected to non-automatic licensing restrictions fell by 2.4 percent year-on-year during January-December 2011.
The share of China in Argentina's total textile and clothing imports rose from 25.2 percent in 2008 to 31.5 percent in 2011, while Brazil's share dipped from 34.3 percent in 2008 to 25.5 percent last year.
Textile and apparel exports from Argentina grew by 38.9 percent year-on-year during the 12-month period.
During the year, average capacity utilization in Argentine textile and garment industry was at 77.9 percent, registering a decline of 6.7 percent year-on-year.
