Spun Silk World Co. and Chul Thai Silk Co., two Thailand companies engaged in silk production, are set to receive the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certification.

The GOTS certification is awarded to companies that meet the globally accepted parameters of production of an organic grade of textiles. The parameters cover all areas of production including harvesting of raw materials, manufacturing of textiles, and labeling of products.

The GOTS standard requires that all steps involved in the manufacturing process to be both environment-friendly and socially responsible.

In case of silk yarn, the mulberry fields should also be made free of harmful chemicals to ensure organic silk. It is because the silkworms feed on mulberry leaves.

The GOTS certificate will help the two Thai firms to export its silk yarn to overseas markets, where organic silk is in high demand.

At present, very few of the 985,000 mulberry growers in Thailand stick to chemical-free growing of mulberry.

In 2011, Thailand produced 517 tons of manually-woven silk and 394 tons of machine-woven silk.
