African textile & garment sector attracts investment

Meles Zenawi, the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, has said the continent of Africa is attracting investments in the textile and clothing industry owing to availability of raw material and low labour costs.
Inaugurating “Origin Africa – Ethiopia 2012” trade expo, the Prime Minister said Africa has natural resources and low labour costs, which are a positive factor for textile and apparel industry.
However, he added that Africa lacks sufficient infrastructure that is needed for making any business profitable. He stressed on the need for giving priority to the development of the infrastructure in the continent.
The Prime Minister said the Ethiopian Government has recognized infrastructure development as one of the key priority areas and is strengthening its transportation, telecommunication and electricity sub-sectors.
Origin Africa – Ethiopia 2012 aims to promote Africa as a sourcing destination, and change the mindset about doing business in Africa. It targets to attract the world audience comprising of buyers, entrepreneurs and fashion designers.
The trade expo highlights the developments in the African cotton, textile and garment industries and projects the continent as a source of supply of cotton, fabrics and clothing items.
It brings together decision makers and entrepreneurs from 20 African countries and provides opportunities for global buyers to make contacts with African industry and designers and to boost business.
Currently in its third year, Origin Africa – Ethiopia is one of the largest trade exhibitions in Africa.
This year's expo has seen participation from over 60 exhibitors from Africa, India, China, the US and the EU covering the entire textile and apparel supply chain including fibres, fabrics, home textiles and fashion accessories.
The four-day expo is being organized by African Cotton and Textile Manufacturers Federation (ACTIF), in collaboration with the Ethiopian Textile Industry Development Institute (TIDI) and the Ethiopian Textile and Garments and Manufacturing Association (ETGAMA).
