Bamboo could be an answer to the huge volumes of raw materials that the Cambodian garment industry needs to import each year.
Eric Mousset – organizer of the Bamboo Green Growth and Carbon Finance Conference told delegates at a conference held last week.
He said, “The economy of the country is highly dependent on the clothing export sector, which imports huge volumes of fabrics each year.
“Cambodia which has an abundance of bamboo forests could take advantage of this and develop textiles from the fibre of the bamboo.
“Processing bamboo into fabrics and in turn clothing could mean huge value-addition and could also result in precious savings of foreign exchange”, he told delegates.
“Clothing made from bamboo fibres has a higher absorbency than cotton, which could prove to be a major value proposition”, he informed.
