Taiwanese textile exports decline in 2012

Taiwanese textile exports fell in the first four months of 2012, according to statistics from the Ministry of Finance. They dropped 6.4 percent from a year earlier.

Taiwan's cumulative exports stood at US $96.37 billion from January to April, down 4.7 percent year on year.

In contrast, its rival South Korea saw its annual growth rate slow down over the same period, but still achieved a positive growth of 0.9 percent.

In the period between January and March 2012, Japan's exports rose 3.2 percent year on year Singapore's exports gained 6.2 percent and those from China grew 7.6 percent.

In the first four months of 2012, among 10 major export products, export value of 8 products fell compared with same period last year.

Of which, information and communications products plunged 16.1 percent, chemicals reduced 11.4 percent, optical goods dipped 9.4 percent, textiles fell 6.4 percent and electronic products declined 5.9 percent.

Lin Lizhen of the Ministry of Finance said that, except Japan, other neighboring Asian countries achieved double digit growth in 2011, but since this year, their export growth rates have displayed single digit growth.
